Canadian Society of
O T O L A R Y N G O L O G Y -
Head and Neck Surgery

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Canadian Otolaryngological Society, as it was know then, was founded by three doctors, George Hodge, William J. McNally and Jules Brahy. Their aim was to create a charter that would further the training of members of the specialty and allow them to "work in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and cooperation.”

At the first meeting of the Canadian Medical Association in 1946, a constitution and the bylaws were written. The officers elected were G.E. Hodge, president, Howard McCart, vice-president, E.G. Washington, treasurer and Jules Brahy, secretary. They received 230 applications to join the newly formed association. Initially, membership was offered to all otolaryngologists in good standing at the time the Society was formed but subsequently restricted to those certified by the Royal College or an equivalent qualification recognized by the council.

The first meeting of the COS was held at Minaki Lodge, Ontario on June 23 and 24, 1947. There were 48 members who attended. Since that time, the Society has held an annual meeting in different locations across the country. On February 15, 1978, the COS was incorporated and officially became know as the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, a name that better reflected the scope of the specialty.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery is dedicated to improving patient care through the support of education, the promotion of research, the dissemination of information, the scientific advancement of the Society, and the maintenance of high professional and ethical standards.

The means of accomplishing this mission include the publication of a journal, the holding of an annual scientific meeting, collaboration with the Royal College in the holding of certification examinations, and the promotion of continuing medical education.

The Society acknowledges that professional development represents more than traditional continuing medical education focused primarily on updating medical knowledge and intends to offer learning opportunities that extend beyond the limits of traditional themes.

POSITION ON COCHLEAR IMPLANTS IN CHILDREN

SINCE the majority of society is a “hearing” one;
SINCE optimal results are achieved by implantation at younger rather than older ages;
The Canadian Society of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery supports the use of cochlear implants in children.
IN THE PRESENCE of informed consent in the case of a child by the parents or legal guardian;
WHERE surgeons are available capable of performing the procedure safely;
WHERE proper aural rehabilitation is available.

POSITION ON HEARING LOSS AND OTOLARYNGOLOGICAL DISEASE IN DEVELOPING COMMUNITIES

  1. We recognize many areas in the world as disadvantaged from the standpoint of otolaryngology, hearing, and ear health care. This includes remote areas in Canada, particularly those in the North that, because of distance and isolation, are disadvantaged.
  2. We recognize many populations in developing countries who do not have access to otolaryngologic care.
  3. The Society supports its members in their endeavour to provide otolaryngologic care to both of the above populations or groups.
  4. The Society supports the education of all health care workers involved in the provision of otolaryngologic, hearing, and ear health care to these populations, including physicians, audiologists, nurses, and technicians. This support is both to provide education in developing countries and for personnel from developing countries in Canada.
  5. The Society supports its members providing such education both in developing areas and in our own home base.
  6. The Society encourages Provincial Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons to modify requirements for training licensure for physicians from disadvantaged countries, particularly those seeking educational experience only.
