60th Annual Meeting
May 14 - 17, 2006
KELOWNA, BC

It is with pleasure that I report on the highly successful annual meeting of the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery held in Kelowna, British Columbia. The meeting was a success in all aspects - scientific, social and financial. Kelowna and the perfect weather we experienced, provided us with a spectacular setting.

On the scientific side, our guest speakers provided us with informative and provocative material. For me, the highlights of the presentations included:

  • Our Guest of Honour, William Crysdale, who in his address encouraged us to be part of a team and to value patients' perspective of their quality of life.
  • Richard Rosenfeld's eloquent and entertaining insight into evidence in medicine and the notion that less might be better in the management of our patients.
  • Gerry Funk's extensive work on the quality of life in head and neck cancer reinforcing the principle that the patients' perception of their quality of life is paramount.
  • Jesus Medina's remarkable history of neck node management and the scientific reasoning behind its evolution. It was truly a history of the neck dissection from birth until the present time in thirty minutes.
  • Matthew Yung has hopefully provoked Canadian otolaryngologists to adopt a scientific collection of data to allow for evidence based decisions. His quote "evidence based, not eminent based medicine" was memorable.

  • The scientific program of papers, panels and posters was skillfully arranged by Andre Tan and very well attended, including Wednesday morning, when attendance is usually at its lowest. This was the first year that our platinum sponsors were given the opportunity to follow the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons' Guidelines and provide Maincert CPD credits at their symposia. The programs were all excellent and well attended. Our thanks to our platinum sponsors for this added value to our annual meeting. The Medtronic Poliquin Resident Research Day was again an outstanding kickoff to our meeting. Based on the quality of these presentations, it is safe to say that the future of Canadian otolaryngology is in good hands.

Last, but certainly not least, was the social aspect of the meeting. The annual general meeting of the CSOHNS is a superb opportunity for otolaryngologists, trainees, corporate sponsors and friends and spouses to socialize. There were many great and spectacular venues. The "Fun Run", a first for the Society, was held on the only chilly morning we had (great for a run!). Spousal and partner programs and the golf tournament were all blessed with great weather and spectacular views of the Okanagan.

Our Society thanks our guests - Gerry Funk, Jesus Medina, Richard Rosenfeld and Matthew Yung. They made a major commitment to us, time from their busy careers and with some arduous travel, to come to Kelowna and be such an enhancement to all aspects of the meeting. As your President, I enjoyed working with each of them. The meeting went off in a "glitch-free" manner thanks to many in our Society. This includes Bruce and Carole Povah, and the local arrangements team who provided us with the flavour of Kelowna; Andre Tan for coordinating the scientific program - a massive amount of work; Donna Humphrey for her skill, expertise and grace in organizing this meeting. Our thanks goes to our corporate sponsors who play an increasing important role in the success of our meeting. Thanks to the membership-at-large for their commitment to making the Society work and the annual meeting successful.

Jane and I had a great time and hope you all enjoyed 2006 in the Okanagan.

    Paul Odell, Immediate Past-President

    59th Annual Meeting
    June 19 - 22, 2005
    St. John's, NEWFOUNDLAND

The 2005 annual meeting was without a doubt a success. It was certainly a great pleasure to host the convention in St. John's, Newfoundland and it was something of a historic occasion as it was the first visit by the Society to this province. 250 members, and well over 100 spouses and children attended.

Newfoundland hospitality was extrodinary and we are all indebted to Ken and Joanne Burrage, the local arrangements chairs, for all their work in planning the social events.

As usual, Joe Dort put together an outstanding scientific program that covered a wide variety of topics, all within the scope of the specialty. We would all like to thank him for his dedication and hard work over his 5-year term.

Our sincerest thanks as well to the guest speakers, Drs. Clark Rosen, Patrick Gullane and Charles Myer III and to the special speaker Professor J.A. Tuck.

We would also like to recognize our corporate sponsors and exhibitors. Without their interest and support we would be very hard-pressed to host such an outstanding event.

Next year the meeting will be held in beautiful Kelowna, British Columbia, May 14 - 17, 2006. Paul Odell and Bruce Povah are working hard to put together an outstanding program. We hope to see you all there.
