POLIQUIN MEDTRONIC RESIDENT COMPETITION
CHAIR: Dr. Emad Massoud, HALIFAX, NS
Description
This research competition, sponsored by Medtronic, is available to residents in otolaryngology. It recognizes, in memoriam, the name of Jacques Poliquin, who was a prominent otolaryngologist, researcher, and educator. Dr. Poliquin fostered this competition in its formative years.
Two categories of awards are offered, one for clinical research and the other for work in basic science. If the submission is co-authored by a supervisor, the student must have undertaken the majority of the work and be the first author, if and when the paper is published. The competition is included as part of the annual scientific program of the CSOHNS. An effort will be made to have a wide geographic distribution of entrants, or at least one candidate from each Canadian Residency Training Program. Winners or honourable mentions from an individual university competition will be given priority. Medtronic will finance the successful candidates’ expenses to the meeting by providing economy return airfare and hotel accommodations for two nights.
Eligibility
The competition is open to all residents training in a Canadian otolaryngology program. Foreign residents doing a fellowship year in a Canadian program and Canadian residents doing a fellowship outside of Canada are eligible. A paper may be submitted any time during the candidate’s training and no later than the first competition year following completion of the training period.
Review Committee
Submissions will be judged by a jury of at least three members of the CSOHNS chosen by the Awards Committee Chair. Seventy percent of the score will be based on the written manuscript and thirty percent on the quality of presentation.
1. Written Presentation: identification of problem and objectives, project design, originality, quality of illustrations, discussion of results, literature review and bibliography, and scientific and clinical value.
2. Oral Presentation: presentation and quality of slides, clarity of central idea, defense of thesis, and response to questions.
Prizes
Two prizes are awarded, one for clinical research and the other for basic research. Each winner will receive return economy airfare from anywhere in North America to the host city of the annual meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery the following September and two nights accommodations at one of the conference hotels. The winner’s names and project titles will become part of an ongoing Society listing.
Guidelines for Submissions
An abstract must be submitted on the form for the competition on this website to the Awards Committee Chair by 4:00 pm on OCTOBER 31. The abstract form and instructions are available on the Society’s website: www.entcanada.org ONLY. A resident may not submit more than one paper per year. The final paper must be submitted to the Awards Committee Chair and for publication in the Journal of Otolaryngology no later than 4:00 pm on March 31, to permit circulation to the jury and for planning by Medtronic. All submissions and communications will be conducted electronically using the resident's email address on the application form. Hard copies of the paper NEED NOT be sent. Successful candidates are required to present their work at the Residents’ Research Day.
