FACIAL PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

General Description

Fellows will have a robust experience in the breadth of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. This will include exposure to:

  1. Reconstructive surgery for cutaneous malignancies including; local, regional and some free flaps and facial reanimation.
  2. Head & Neck Oncology including; thyroid surgery, parotids, oral cavity, etc.
  3. Aesthetic facial surgical procedures: Facial rejuvenation surgery including deep-place facelift, open and closed rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, otoplasty, Co2 Laser, etc.
  4. Injectable treatments: Neuromodulators, Dermal fillers, Belkyra, PRP, Silhouette thread lifts, etc.
  5. Minor Procedures: Mole and cyst removal, earlobe repair, buccal fat excision, etc.

 


Fellowship Type – Clinical 80%, Research 20%

Objectives

  1. To provide Royal College Fellows advanced training in a diverse scope of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery with the goal of creating experts in the field.
  2. To provide the fellow insight and experience in the management of a private practice facial plastic surgery clinic.

Duration of Fellowship

 The length of the fellowship is 12- 48 months, generally beginning July 1st of each year.

Required Prior Residency Training

The candidate must have completed a recognized residency program in Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery

 


Accept Foreign Medical Graduate – Yes    (please see mandatory requirements)

 


English language proficiency: International Medical Graduates are required to provide proof of proficiency in the English language that meets the requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan.

International medical graduates are exempt from language proficiency testing if their medical education was in one of the following countries or Caribbean Islands identified by the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada as having English as a first or native language: Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, US Virgin Islands; Caribbean Islands: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Grenadines, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad & Tobago.

IMG applicants whose medical education was in a country not listed above will be required to complete one of the following language exams, or demonstrate other proof of English proficiency acceptable to CPSS. CPSS will accept a valid test score from one of the following language exams:

  • IELTS academic versionand achieved a minimum of 7.0 in each of the components; or
  • OET-medicine versionand achieved a minimum grade of B; or
  • CELPIP – Generaland achieved a minimum grade of 9 in all sections.

Exam scores will be considered valid for 2 years from the date taken. Scores that are less than those stated above will not be considered. Score results that have expired will not be considered.

Alternative proof of language proficiency: International Medical Graduates who completed high school in Canada with instruction entirely in English are required to submit their Canadian high school transcript on if they would like to request an exemption from the CPSS English language requirement.

MCCQE1 or USMLE: IMGs must provide proof of successful completion of the MCCQE1 all three steps of USMLE (Statement of Results, Supplemental Information Report).

 


Annual Stipend/Salary

The salary for the fellow is $89,359 per annum in Canadian dollars for 2021-2022. Unless the candidate is externally funded.

Malpractice insurance is arranged through the Canadian Medical Protective Association by the fellow on the basis of an educational or limited license.

 


 Additional Benefits (e.g. meetings, housing)

The fellow is given 4 weeks leave during the year.   All time away from the practice must be cleared in advance with the Fellowship Director.

 


On Call Responsibilities

 The fellow is on-call for after-hours and weekend call for the patients of Dr. Jaggi including private practice and community hospital Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery call (St. Paul’s Hospital).

 


Case Mix

Surgical exposure will include approximately >200 ablative/reconstructive cases (Major/Minor),  30-50 rhinoplasties, 30-50 aging face cases, 50-70 oculoplastic cases.  The fellow will have an excellent exposure to non-surgical aspects of facial plastic surgery as well.

 


Typical Weekly Timetable

The fellow will spend three-four days per week in a private practice setting and one-two days per week at St. Paul’s Hospital. This will translate to two-three days per week in the operating room and two-three days per week in clinic. Exposure to both major operative cases and minor procedure cases will be available.

Elective students, residents and fellows intermittently spend time in the office. The fellow is responsible to assist in the office with patient care.

The Centers offering this comprehensive fellowship program have met with international standards of head and neck training and are accredited by IFHNOS. The program directors are established leaders in the specialty.
